Mid June thru October
The
thrill of catching up to 7 different species of fish on the same day make our
Combo Charters our most popular trip. Leaving the dock well before dawn we will
journey to either Stellwagen Bank or the Backside Waters of Cape Cod. The steam will take around 1 hour and consist of preparing the gear and terminal tackle
to do battle with our opponent / Bluefin Tuna. The unmistakable signs are everywhere (gulls
circling, whales breaching & the sun rising to the East) so let the action
begin.
Today's
Charter is probably our most popular one. We start off by putting down the outriggers
and letting out 5 lines consisting of various colored squid bars or freshly rigged
imported baits. The reels are Shimmano 50's with custom BeastMaster
Rods. All gear is stand up and you are fitted with various types of harnesses.
Trolling is our most effective method but at times Jigging with light tackle or
chumming can be deadly on our prey- the "Medium and School Bluefin Tuna."
Medium
and School Tuna range from legal size (47") up to 72". They weigh between
50 and 200 pounds and are excellent fighting fish with battles of up to an hour
not uncommon. The steaks from these Bluefin's (loins) make for some incredible
eating, especially on the grill. Todays tally is three keeper Bluefin's of 60,
92 & 131 pounds with 3 more being released. Trip limits for these
Tuna's are
regulated by the NMFS and change from year to year depending on the quota
amount. There is no sale allowed on these Bluefin's. Some Charters elect to fish
for these fish all day but 30 years of experience has shown that the best bite
is somewhere between 5:00am and 9:00am
Some
of our customers may decide to tackle the Giant Bluefin Tuna. These magnificent
creatures are 73" or greater and weigh between 230 pounds up to 1200 pounds.
Our personal best aboard the "BIG MAC" is a Bluefin of 1080 pounds that took 2 hours to land. All gear is of top quality (a must). Penn 2 speed, 130 pound class International Reels with custom 130 pound class rods
are used. Giant Bluefin's may reach speeds up to 50 knots and only high quality
line is used(Spectra, FluroCarbon & high quality mono).
Our single
best day on Giant Bluefin Tuna was a triple hookup in Cape Cod Bay. All three
fish were somehow landed and weighed 590, 596 & 621 pounds (wow!). Limits
for Giants is once again regulated by the NMFS on a yearly basis. With the ever
present problem of DogFish (Sand Shark) eating our baits, "BIG MAC"
was one of the first Charter Boats to fine tune the Kite Fishing method for Giants
using live BlueFish. As is the policy for most Charter Boats, any Giant
that is caught must be kept by the vessel permit holder. Your Charter will receive
1/3 of the proceeds from the dollar return of the fish.
Once again, early morning
is best or at a tide change. Again our many years of experience here show that
to optimize your trip a switch to other species at this time is best. You may
elect to fish for Giant Bluefin's all day if you wish.
Shark
The
second half of your Combo Trip can also consist of Shark Fishing in lieu of the
Ground Fishing. All day Shark Charters are also available. Sharks that frequent
our Cape Cod water's consist of Mako Shark, Threshers, Blue, Porbeagles and an
occasional Great White. Sharks seem to establish themselves in our waters the
midde of July and can be caught into October. Gear once again is stand-up with
all International Rod and Reels. All our Shark Fishing is done by drifting and
chumming. All chum and tackle is provided by the boat.
Blue
Sharks are by far the most common Shark found and while they can reach weights
of 400 pounds or better, 200 to 300 pound fish are more common. While being great
game fish they unfortunately are not very good table food. Porbeagle and Mako
Sharks arrive mid to late summer. A very good eating fish Mako has been compared
to Swordfish as far as taste.
Mako's are tremendous fighters
and have been known to jump many feet out of the water. Fish range from the mid
100 pound range to a fish over 1300 pounds which was caught out of Marshfield,
MA.
Porbeagle Sharks are more cold water Sharks and show up
later in the summer and into the fall. "BIG MAC" was commercially longlining
for Cod one January day when a huge Porbeagle Shark attacked a 40 pound WolFish
at the boat devouring it in one bite as it took off along the surface like a B.52.
Shark
fishing can be the second half of the Combo Trip or can be done all day.
Cod, Giant Sea Pollock & Haddock
OUR
SECOND PART OF TODAY'S CHARTER takes us East to the underwater canyons of WildCat Knoll. This deep water piece of bottom holds up to seven different species
of fish including Giant Sea Pollock (up to 35 pounds), Cod (home of the Whale
Cod), Haddock, Wolfish, Cusk, Hake and the great eating Red Fish.
Jig Fishing
with diamond jigs and tube teasers is the preferred method used on the Pollock
(make great fish steaks and fish cakes). Bait which is free of charge is used
on the great eating Haddock while both methods can be used on Cod and all other
species.

Our first drop is met with groans of all aboard as rods double over.
Fifteen minutes later double and triple headers of Giant Pollock hit the deck.
We estimate 250 pounds of fish are landed on the first drop. Action remains steady
with 5 full fish boxes of Pollock being fillet. We finish the day catching 2 boxes
of Haddock (6-10 pound range). Lots of market size Cod along with Cusk up to 20
pounds, Hake and a box of Red Fish. The trip home will take around two hours with
the mate busy cutting fish. Our biggest problem arises as we dock the boat -
where to buy more coolers!
Bass / Bluefish
In
addition to our Medium and School Bluefin Tuna Fishing or Giant Tuna Fishing
another way to spend the second half of your Charter would be to experience the
fantastic Striped Bass and Bluefish fishing along the shores of Cape Cod. Long
noted for it's trophy Bass, the cape has yielded many Cow Bass over 40 pounds.
For the "BIG MAC" our personal best was a 51 pound fish that hit a jigged
Eel in 25' of water. Jumbo BlueFish can usually be found in great quantities along
Race Point. "BIG MAC" is set up with a live bait system, light spinning
gear when fish are on the surface or the conventional method. Best times are
the months of June thru October. All your Penn Reels and Custom Rods are supplied
at no charge.
